12/12/96 Meeting

We ended 1996 with a very encouraging attendance despite all the holiday activities with approximately 40% of our membership in attendance.

The agenda for this meeting was primarily to celebrate the holidays. Several of our members were accompanied by their guests and the Portuguese Consul, Dr. Natercia Teixeira and her husband, Francisco Costa Lobo also stopped by for the initial part of our meeting.

At this meeting nominations for officers for 1997 were taken. Joe Branco nominated the following people officers on behalf of the current administration:

Jose Reis - President

Antonio Gomes - Vice President

Robert Lopes - Secretary

Paulo Da Silva - Treasurer

This slate was unanimously accepted by the members in attendance and will formally be elected at the meeting later this month.

Year-End President's Message from Jose Branco:

As everyone knows APEAS has struggled since it began operating 2+ years ago. First, there were tedious meetings about establishing by-laws, then there were differences of opinion among the founding members about the society's mission and finally procedural election issues almost tore us apart and threatened to dissolved our group.

However, I'm happy to announce that all that is behind us. In 1996, we went back to the "drawing board" and a core group of members voted to maintain our organization alive by creating an informal but constructive atmosphere, polling the members about the society's mission, attracting new members and maintaining focus and continuity by setting a schedule of monthly dinners with presentations.

In addition in 1996 we "cleaned-up" our roster to a true 55+ interested members, published a monthly newsletter and held elections for a new slate of officers.

Congratulations to all of us. I believe we are on the way to becoming one of the premier organizations of the Portuguese-American community. 1997 under the leadership of Jose Reis, our newly elected President, will prove to be a year of growth and achievement that will put our society "on the map" and find our members involved in many worthwhile projects.

Our next meeting is hosted by Art Merces (201-344-4050). The next meeting will be at Don Sancho Restaurant (908-583-6550) beginning at 7PM on Thursday February 6th. The restaurant is located on Rt. 35 North in Aberdeen, NJ (close to Sayerville, South Amboy Movie Theater. Art has invited Councilwoman in Sea Bright NJ Maria Fernandes to speak at this event.
