5/8/97 Meeting
Minutes from the APEAS meeting held at the
Sol Mar restaurant on May 8, 1997.
There were 24 members in attendance along with Frank
Ferreira , a Project Manager who has the responsibility for
the implementation of the U.S. exhibition at World Expo
98.
Dinner discussions revolved around the recent election for
the Council of Communities members, forthcoming projects in
which APEAS may be involved and the Portuguese monument to be
located in front of the new Portuguese Consulate at the Legal
Center.
Frank Ferreira presented the tentative plans for the U.S.
exhibit at the Expo and requested ideas from our group. Bob
Lopes offered the suggestion of a clock display on top of a
monument to the Portuguese people from the U.S. The clock
would be synchronized via the GPS satellite system which
provides atomic precision time and navigational information.
This would be symbolic of the Portuguese maritime heritage as
well as a high tech engineering and architectural display.
Tony Gomes focused a discussion on the Council of
Communities election results and concluded with some ideas to
consider for improving our chances to get members elected in
another four years.
Joe Reis expressed the need to modify and approve the
APEAS by-laws. He also asked that all members complete new
membership forms so we can update our societies
database.

Joe Reis submitted a motion for APEAS to design a Padrao
monument, Jose Branco and Luis Gaspar seconded the motion.
