10/17/96 Meeting

Our October 1996 meeting had approximately 40% of our membership in attendance.

Before the meeting we toured Continental Electric, owned and operated by our member Arthur Merces. Art was very happy and proud to accommodate us at his large motor manufacturing facility. It was very encouraging that the entrepreneurial spirit is still very much part of our community. Thanks Art for the tour and the nice gifts.

Following the tour we met at Sol Mar Restaurant where we heard a great presentation by Jose Vital Morgado of the Portuguese Trade Commission followed by a short video on Expo 98 in Lisbon. Joe distributed some brochures and a series of short video tapes on Porto Wines, Corks from Portugal and Textiles in Portugal.

Following a delicious dinner we welcomed some new members and entered in a healthy debate and discussion on some of our organizational efforts.

Projects in the Works

Tony Gomes (908-463-7038) lead a discussion on activities currently planned and under way by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and the impact to the Portuguese community. There was a suggestion on physically linking the Ironbound with the NJPAC with a paved promenade (calçada) for which the design, materials and artisans may be supplied by the Portuguese government. This project would be incorporated as part of the riverfront development planned by the City of Newark. Those interested in becoming involved and/or have questions please contact Tony at the above number.

We are actively encouraging all our members to bring forth events or any other suggestions that may be of interest to APEAS.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, December 12, 1996. The agenda will be primarily a holiday celebration where our members are invited to bring their families.

Prior to the festivities we will take nominations for the executive positions for 1997 and address all other administrative issues.

The next meeting will be at Sol-Mar Restaurant beginning at 7PM.

Proposed for future meetings.

bulletDecember/January

In January we will need to have APEAS elections, so if you are interested in providing some leadership for 1997 and get more involved in making APEAS a success, make it known at our next meeting. We need to know the names and office positions prior to the January meeting.
