The Portuguese-American Police Association (PAPA) was founded on December 13, 1992 in the City of Newark [New Jersey] by three Portuguese-American police officers that held a deep sense of pride in their heritage and culture.
The Association was started with the following objectives in mind: educating the community, particularly the youth, relative to the criminal justice system; assisting young people in preparing for a career in law enforcement, including exam preparation; bolstering the Portuguese-American community as a whole.
To meet these goals, the Association has undertaken many highly successful endeavors, including, but not limited to, the following; establishing scholarships, sponsoring family picnics, creating and implementing off-duty police officer / citizen patrols, launching associate membership drives, fingerprinting of school age children, citizen naturalization and voter registration drives, assisting at Easter Egg Hunts, and co-sponsoring Halloween and Christmas parades.
The Portuguese-American Police Association (PAPA) has members throughout the United States. The Association has established lodges in Massachusetts (Lodge #2) and Rhode Island (Lodge #3) to better serve the large contingency of Portuguese-American police officers in those states. We are currently attempting to charter lodges in Connecticut and New York.
The Association is open to all full time law enforcement officers, active or pensioned retired, from municipal police officers to federal agents who are of Portuguese descent or who hail from Portuguese speaking countries. Police Officers who wish to join, excluding those who reside in Massachusetts or Rhode Island, will become members of PAPA USA (New Jersey Lodge #1). A group of 10 or more police officers from the same state may apply for a state charter as a new lodge.
Any person interested in becoming a member or obtaining additional information should either Email PAPA USA (NJ Lodge #1) directly or write to the specific lodge below.
